Sometimes an event comes up in London that you just have to write about. Sometimes it’s because it’s just a brilliant event. Other times because you know most people wouldn’t haven’t heard about it.
Chris’s post on the Millbank Tower was like that and I think so is the event at The National Theatre over the weekend.
Now don’t stop reading because you think I’m going to talk about a play.
There’s much more than that this weekend. I guarantee it’s got something on that you’ll like and whoever you want to go with will like.
But let’s face it. With the Carnival, FreightFest and other competing events, it’s going to be a hard sell to get anyone to go with you. Hopefully this post will help you change their minds.
It’s fun, it’s freaky deaky, it could only be in London
The highlight for me is the Emergency Shakespeare play scenes that the 1623 Theatre Company will be performing. What they’re doing is putting different outcomes to four of the Bards plays with the help of the St John Ambulance service.
So you’ll see Romeo and Juliet resuscitated, Ophelia is dragged out of the Thames, Othello’s epilepsy receives expert attention and Leontes gets some help for his panic attack. I just think it’s a brilliant idea. Each scene lasts about 20 minutes so they should be straight to the point.
This is all part of the Alternative Village Fete which is the main theme for the weekend. There’ll also be music, dance, comedy and other strange goings on.
The strangest being, Betty Brawn, the Australian strong women and Abi Collins. They’ll both be doing things to make grown men cry. They’re on Friday night if you like a bit of freaky deaky.
Then there’s the famous Bring & Share Musical Bingo. Instead of marking off numbers, you’re marking of tunes played by the DJ. That’s also on Friday night.
So you see if you want something a little bit unusual and fun for this weekend. I think the National Theatre wins hands down. What do you think?
