A secret place to go to in London for some peace and quiet

secret london gardenRight now it seems to be extra busy in London, is it me or do there seem to be more tourists about than usual for this time of year?

The thing with London is as wonderful and great as it is, in August there seem to be very few places where you can escape from the hordes of tourists, everywhere is busy and noisy and especially on a Saturday it can get too much.

If you find yourself in that state and just need a place to go for some peace and quiet I’d like to share with you a secret place to go to, it’s the Japanese roof garden at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

They call it a school but it’s a college, part of the University of London and unless you’ve been a student there I doubt that you’ve ever heard about it or know where it is and that’s what makes it the perfect getaway.

It’s easy to get to as it just a few minutes walk from Russell Square tube station and just off the square, you head for the Brunei Gallery which is part of the school and go to the first floor.

Remember this is a roof garden so it’s not very big which I could see would be a problem if a lot of people turned up at once because apart from disturbing the nice atmosphere, there are not enough places to sit down.

However as I said not many people know about it so it shouldn’t be busy if you go and I’m sure you’ll find it relaxing and hard to believe you’re still in London, give it a try the next time you want to get away from it all you’ll be glad you did.

The garden is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30 – 5pm and it’s free entry.

I can’t think of many other places in London like this, Rainbowsurfer did a secret London post but have you any other suggestions?
