I got an email the other day by someone wanting to know if I had stopped doing the podcasts because of how I sounded. I thought it was a fair comment because I did sound awful.
But they couldn’t be further from the truth. The reason there have been no podcasts lately is because it seems unless you work for a known publication, some London attractions think you’re worthless.
How do I know this, well the attractions I contacted couldn’t even be bothered to reply. I’ve been waiting for over 2 months and still nothing. The Natural History Museum, the V & A, the Science Museum and the British Museum you should hang your heads in shame.
What I really don’t understand is that these museums are spending money on tube and bus advertising to attract visitors. Yet here I was wanting to do an interview to get behind the scenes, find out why their museum was special and they didn’t want to know. It would have been a win win for both of us and no cost to them.
I’m sure if I was writing for a newspaper or say for Time Out they’d have been happy to see me. But because I’m writing a blog, they have zero interest.
At one stage I was tempted to pretend I was writing for a well known blog to see if I’d be treated differently. But you know the way I figured it; it wouldn’t have made any difference.
These press departments are going to be staffed by crusty, if not in body, minded, old media hacks. As far as they’re concerned the quick fix print article is better than a long term, SEO friendly blog post.
I’m sure things will change and these London attractions will embrace bloggers in the future and give us the same access they do to print journalist. But until then, don’t expect to learn anything insightful about London attractions it’s all just going to be PR fodder.
Have you ever read anything insightful about a London attraction and if so where?
As always thanks for your time.
