the 88 band, free music in london

Listen to their Myspace page and you'll want to see them

Up here on the EPok.com cloud we love the Apple store in London. But it’s not for what they’re selling it’s for the free music gigs they put on every so often.

In the past they’ve had fantastic free sets by Toploader and Patch William.

They’ve had The Mighty Boosh and then Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant talk sessions. And just to prove how clever the Apple marketing boys and girls are they got the nations favourite saucy cook Nigella Lawson to do a demo in the store.

The only other place in central London that puts on free events like this from established names is the HMV store. But to be honest with the wristband allocation etc, unless the person’s a real must see, we wouldn’t recommend going through all the hassle.

Now usually the Apple store gigs are on during the week, but this one’s on this Saturday 22nd at 5.30pm. To me that’s a mistake. Saturday on Regent Street is so busy, as is the Apple store, putting on a free music gig I think is crazy.

Maybe they think the band they’re showcasing, The 88, are not well known enough. They’re going to be wrong. Fans of the band will come down and they’ll bring all their friends and when passers-by find out there’s a free gig they’ll want to come in and I can see it getting messy.

If you’ve never heard of the band, here’s a link to The 88′s Myspace page. Listen to track ‘All ‘Cause of You’ and I think you’ll decide it could be worth trying to get in.

What do you think are The 88 big enough to cause a roadblock?

To recap – The band, The 88, will be performing live for free at the Apple store in London on Regent Street on Saturday 22nd at 5.30pm – 6.30pm. The Apple store is at the Oxford Street end of Regent Street.
