Are London bloggers critical enough of London events or just part of the PR?

I‘ve been holding off mentioning about the Museum of London Docklands going free because I wanted to see what the reaction was from other bloggers. To be honest I’ve been disappointed.

Some pretty heavy weight blogs have simply relayed the news. When what they should have been saying is, “And about time too.” No one seems to be critical of the museum.

I mean what made this museum think it was more special than say The Science Museum or the Victoria and Albert and could charge us for going there?

Did they have something extra special there? No. Is it a huge building with more running costs than it’s counterparts? No.

As bloggers we need to be more critical to keep these guys on their toes so that Londoners and tourists know what to expect and where to get good value for their money.

Too many London bloggers simply re-post, re-tweet or just copy the stuff from PR firms, venues or other bloggers without adding anything to the story. What has happened to the beautiful independent voice of blogging?

Also go and read a selection of blogs on London and see how many of them write anything critical about London or London events.

A visitor to London reading certain London blogs would think all Lates at museums were good and well organised. That the London Eye is worth the queues and that the tube system runs perfectly at weekends.

By all means, if something’s good or it looks like it’s going to be good, big it up. But if something you’ve been to wasn’t any good or you can see that it’s not going to be any good, let people know.

In the past we’ve been just as guilty with what we’ve written. Perhaps what we all should now do is take notice of how food bloggers blog. These guys don’t muck about or mince their words.

Take a look at Dos Hermanos for example. They don’t care if they’re been invited to a restaurant opening, if they think the food’s rubbish they say so. That’s what we should all aspire to and not be some new form of PR for venues and events.

What do you think or do you know any London blogs that really tell it like it is?

Thanks for your time.
