Sometimes a Great Notion - A film few of us have heard of, but should see
Is there anyone who hasn’t heard of Paul Newman? Of course not.
We’ve all seen at least one of his films and guys have either wanted to be him while women have wanted to be with him.
If you’re wondering what I’m talking about it’s because you never saw Newman in his younger days on the big screen. Depressingly good looking for us guys and smouldering for women it all comes through when you see him larger than life on screen in the cinema.
He made so many great films that most of us have never seen at the cinema. In a way we’ve been cheated of his performances because it doesn’t matter how good your TV is, it’s not the same as seeing the film in the cinema.
Thankfully someone at the BFI Southbank has come up with the wonderful idea of showing a collection of his films. This is such a marvellous opportunity to treat yourself to seeing one of your favourite Paul Newman films on the big screen.
They are showing 14 of his films some of which I haven’t heard of and these are the ones I especially want to see. The chances of ever seeing these films on TV is remote unless you are going to Amazon them so this is a once in a lifetime chance to see them at the cinema.
Then of course there are the ones everyone has heard of. The first showing of The Sting is already sold out and there are not that many seats left for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or for Cool Hand Luke.
Why the BFI are showing these last 2 films only once is a mystery considering how popular they were bound to be.
Anyhow the season starts today and ends on the 30th. If you have any interest in any of the films book them today or you will be disappointed.
The Paul Newman film season at the London BFI at Southbank is on from today 13th – 30th. The films are mostly on in the early evening and tickets cost from £6.40 – £9.
