You'll see bicycle polo played at the East Commonwealth Games
The East London Festival 2010 starts on Thursday 4th and is billed as a celebration of East London.
When I heard about the festival the first thing I could think of was what part of East London is there to celebrate.
The problem I have with East London is that during the day and even early evening the City fringes of East London are fine. But as it starts getting later and the deeper you go into East London the worse it gets. Yet people make East London sound like some sort of utopian mixing pot.
Hey correct me if I’m wrong and put it in the comments. But I wouldn’t advise most Londoners let alone tourists to venture into East London at night.
As I said you’ll be fine on the fringes and by fringes I’m talking about Spitalfields, Barbican, Farringdon around those sort of areas, which isn’t the proper East London anyway.
Am I being too harsh? I don’t think so because if you look at when a lot of the events are on. You’ll see most of the events are on during the day and in the areas that I mentioned.
Bearing all that in mind the event that I think sounds the best fun is the East Commonwealth Games. It won’t have any games that you’ve ever seen unless you’ve been to India. The point here is that it’s all about fun and this is the sort of event that the whole family can enjoy. Some of the games also allow you to participate in which is a great idea and adds to the fun atmosphere.
The Games take places in Spitalfields this Friday and Saturday. There is an opening ceremony on Friday at 12.30, with music, dance and the obligatory opening speeches. Then on Saturday the actual games take place and end at 5pm with a closing ceremony.
As I said this is all part of the East London Festival so you should also go to the Barbican this weekend as they too have various special events going on. Click Barbican events for more details.
