A vintage funfair that kids will adore
If it wasn’t for the utter uniqueness of this event it wouldn’t get a mention on this blog. After all it’s just a funfair.
But this is like no funfair you’re likely to have seen before and if you’re visiting London this is a once in a life time experience. These vintage rides are incredible and they’re run by steam! If you’re in London with kids, you have to treat them to this.
The Carters Steam Fair is a proper step back in time to how funfairs use to be, some of the rides are over 100 years old. Yet the rides look fantastic because of how well they’ve been beautifully restored, the art work on them makes them look like new.
Admittedly it’s not a big fair and most of the rides and attractions are not as scary as modern rides, but that’s not what you’re going there for. This is a fair that will entertain you and show you things that you’ve never seen before.
The best example of this is the Motorcycle Wall of Death. How they managed to get this past our Health and Safety regulations and are able to pay the exorbitant insurance fees is a wonder. I had never seen a real Wall of Death act before and although you know how they do it, it’s still very impressive.
I only wish they could get permission to have the fair in a more central location. This would have been perfect in say Hyde Park or Regent’s Park. Instead you have to go to Battersea Park, which although a nice park, isn’t the easiest place to get to.
You’re best option is to go to Victoria and get a train to Battersea Park. These aren’t the most frequent trains but it’s only one stop and then only a few minutes walk to the park at the other end.
If you’re in London with kids and you want to do something different, visit the Carters Steam fair. It’s in London until the 28th at Battersea Park. It’s open from 12 – 8pm every day.
