Enjoy early evening music at the National

Many people rush home after work or if they are visitors to London stay in their hotel room until they are ready to go to dinner, unaware that there are lots of things to do in the early evening in London.

A good example of this is the National Theatre. Most Londoners and visitors to London who are not interested in seeing a play don’t have the National Theatre on their list as a place worth visiting. This is a shame for them but good for you as it means there’s more room for you to enjoy this series of early evening events that I’m going to tell you about.

Every week day in the evening the National Theatre hosts a live music event in the Lyttelton foyer. These events are never overly crowded but they don’t always have anyone you’d go out of your way to see.

Next week however deserves special mention because they have three very good acts performing that you should make the effort to see.

On Monday you get the chance to hear Laura Collins’s beautiful voice singing like the jazz singers of old. It’s a great way to either end your working day or start your evening. Here’s a link to some snippets of Laura Collins tracks.

On Tuesday they have the Tommaso Starace Trio. Tommaso’s saxophone playing has been getting great reviews for years and will definitely get you foot tapping and wanting to dance. To hear this guy play will be a treat. Listen to some of the Tommaso’s Starace Trio music here.

Finally on Thursday it’s the Jonathan Gee Trio. Even if you’re not a fan of jazz piano you’re sure to come away feeling mellow at the very least. Here a link to his Jonathan Gee MySpace page.

These evening sessions start at 5.45 and are in the Lyttelton foyer and go on for at most an hour but usually 45 minutes. As I said they are free so turn up, listen, enjoy some good music and then go on your way.

Also so that you don’t miss out on other things to do in London keep reading our blog.

Great tip, this! It is also worth having a look at the Southbank Centre website, as they have a lot of free events. Some concerts have free pre-concert talks or even pre-concert concerts, but there seems to be something for everyone, from chocolate sculpting to concerts and dance workshops.

The calender of free events at the Southbank Centre can be found here: http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/free
