I‘m sure I’m not alone on this, but have you ever hear of Irving Penn?
Didn’t think so, yet here’s a guy who’s photographed some of the most famous people in the world for over half a century. Yet most ordinary people haven’t heard of him.
Why is that?
If you go to the exhibition of his works at the National Portrait Gallery, without a doubt you’ll see some great pictures, just look at this one of Nicole Kidman. But you won’t find out why he’s not universally known.
If you want to know why you’ve not heard of him or just want more details about the exhibition, do what 99% of people don’t do. Go on one of the free tours that accompany the exhibition.
These free tours are never that well advertised but the people in the know, know about them and they do get full. Go on one and you’ll get a greater understanding of the exhibition and the man.
Each tour is run by a member of the museum staff closely involved with the exhibition and I highly recommend you try to get on one.
There are only 6 dates that the tour will be on and each tour starts at 7pm. Below is a link to the site so you can see what dates are available and what you need to do.
As for the exhibition itself it’s called the Irving Penn Portraits and it’s at the National Portrait Gallery. It begins this Thursday and is on until 6th June with tickets priced at only £10 which is fantastic value.
