Tripadvisor recently announced their user survey awards, I won’t call it by its official title, and no London hotel got in the top 20 in the UK.
Does this finally prove that Tripadvisors reviews are unreliable? I think it does. There I said it. And it shows the sorry state of journalism and blogging when so many journalists and bloggers lap up this PR puff and then regurgitate it without a single word of caution about the survey.
It’s obvious that as more PR companies and hotels start writing good reviews for clients and themselves. Reviews are becoming more unreliable and the review sites need to clean up their act.
Honestly. Let’s just stop for a moment and really think about the Tripadvisor results. You’re trying to tell me that with all the hotels in London. None of them were in the top 25 in the UK. You’re trying to tell me that the Primrose Valley hotel is better than the entire 5 star, 4 star and even 3 star hotels in London.
Come on. The fallacy that reviews from anonymous reviewers are trustworthy is finally and completely exposed. Look at the amount of single reviews you see on Tripadvisor. Reviews from people who it seems suddenly have a desperate need to do a review, but then don’t ever do another one again.
So how can this be?
Well let me ask you. What would you do if you owned a hotel and a PR company approaches you and says it can get you favourable reviews to boost your rankings? Obviously being an honest hotelier you do not take them up on their offer.
But then you see a competitor start to rise in the rankings and eventually overtake you. Do you still turn the PR offer down?
