If you only do one thing in London this week make sure you see the switching on of the Christmas lights. Normally this is overhyped and it’s a bit of a non event, but this year it’s definitely going to be special.
For starters there’ll be a joint lighting up at Regent Street, Oxford Street and at St Paul’s Cathedral, this has never been done before. But what I like are the concerts they’re putting on as well. At Oxford Circus they’ve got girl group The Saturdays and Taio Cruz and they’ll be some kind of live performance from the cast of Sister Act. Then to actually switch the lights on they’ve got Jim Carey.
At the same time just up the road on Regent Street, indie band The Noisettes, Daniel Merriweather and the Community Choir will be performing. This time to do the honours of switching the lights on its Colin Firth and Jodie Prenger.
Finally at St Paul’s Cathedral and I don’t know how they got a line up like this. But they’ve got Spandau Ballet, Little Boots, Faryl Smith, the cast of Hairspray and the St Paul’s Cathedral choir performing. Instead of the street lights being turned on there’ll be a light show which Bob Hoskins will switch on.
Now I know a lot of those names won’t mean anything to most of you, but honestly whichever venue you go to you’re in for a treat. The switching on and concerts take place on Tuesday 3rd between 5pm – 6.30pm.
One last thing there’s also going to be a record breaking attempt for the largest number of people carol singing at one time. The three stages at the venues will be linked so if you fancy saying you were part of it, get down to one of the venues.
I know each of these venues you will be packed so if you want to get a good spot you really are going to have to get there early. I’d say 2pm at the very latest.
