It doesn’t matter what your thoughts on war are, the fact is many people have died because of wars. Having a day to remember them is the least we could all do.
This year Remembrance Day is on the 8th. There will be various services all over London but the main focus is in Whitehall where the traditional parade of veteran and current soldiers will take place.
It’s always busy for the parade, which starts at 10am, so if you want to get a good view you’ll need to be in the Whitehall area at about 7am.
I’ve put part of the poem, For The Fallen, you’re likely to hear it during or near the end of the ceremony and it sums it all up.
- They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
- Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
- They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
- They fell with their faces to the foe.
- They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
- Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
- At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
- We will remember them.
